Feb. 29 Japanese Chichester completes Lofe Pacific crossing.: Japan's newest hero. Ikuo Kashima, can now join the ranks of other famous voyagers including Sir Francis Chichester, after his lone crossing of the pacific in his 5.8 - meter long sailboat Koraasa I which took him 101 days for the 10.000 kilometer voyage form Long Beach, California U.S.A. to Yokohama. Unfortunately for Kashima, he sailed into the fast flowing Japan Current due to fog, and after battling to six days to get out of it finnaly accepted an outboard motor to do the trick, however the motor broke down as he neared Yokohama and he reluctant;y accepted a towline after he was assured that the Japan Ocean Sailing Association had announced that it is recognizing Kashima's Pacific crossing as a success because he had reached Japan's territorial waters. Kashima a previous crossed the Atlantic from Genoa, Italy to New York solo.
