Aug. 23, 1961 - Group of Climbers Missing as Japanese Volcano Erupts.: Mount Asama, a more than 2, 500 - meter high volcano near Karuizawa, erupted last week in Japan. A group of climbers on it is feared that the alpinists may have been killed by the lava. A resort hotel was damaged by stones; white ask fell as far as Tokio - more than 100 miles away. Photo shows erupting last Friday - the last eruption was in April, 1959
