Jul. 07, 1960 - Japanese girl swimmer beats world record (her own) in Tokio: Miss Sakato Tanaka, broke the world's record by clocking 2 mins. 33.3 secs, in the women's 200 meters backstroke event, during the finals of the Japanese National Swimming Championships, held in Tokio, where selection committee were picking Japanese swimmers for the Rome Olympics. The 18 year old schoolgirl clipped 3.8 secs off the record which she established last April. Photo shows Miss Satoko Tanaka seen during her record breaking swim in Tokyo recently
