May 12, 1968 - Earthquakes Rock North Japan. Two violent earthquake struck an extensive area in Northern Japan on Thursday (may 170. killing 38 persons, injuring many, and destroying 800 buildings. Fires and tidal waves followed, driving ships on the rocks, and sinking many fishing boats. It was the worst earthquake since the Good Friday earthquake in Alaska in 1964. The Northern Japan short of the 7.9 which levelled Tokyo and Yokohama in 1923 killing 100, 000 people.
