Jun. 06, 1968 - Japan's First Bathyscape launched; Japan's first Bathyscape was recently launched at the Kawasaki Dockyard in Kobe. Christened Shinkai (deepsea), the vessel was built for the Japan science and Technology Agency. It can submerge to a depth of 600 meters (1, 980 feet), and cruise underwater at 3.5 knots. The bathyscape is manned by a crew of four, and measures has windows for underwater observation and powerful lights to illuminate the buttom of the sea. In the bow is a manipulator which can pick up objects from the sea bed, and it is designed to rise automatically when it submerges to more than 600 meters.
