Nov. 30, 1970 - Coup D'Etatet in Tokto Fails Author commits Hara Kiri : Yukio Mishima, well - known author and once mentioned as a possible Nobel prize winner, attempted to stir up members of the 32nd infantry Regiment stationed at Ichigaya, Tokyo in the hope of staging a coup d'etat, and join his Tate no Kai (Association of Shields). He appealed to the men of the Japan Self-Defence forces to risre up and change the Constitution, so that they would be the power in Japan around the Emperor. When the soldiers did not heed his appeal, he entered a room at the military head quarters with four of his supporters dressed in uniforms he had designed on the pattern of Old-time Japanese military uniforms. Stripping to the waist as he knelt he slit his stomach in Samurai hair-kiri fashion, then his Chief of Staff Hissho Morita a 25 year - old University student decaptated him in the tradition manner, tehen Morita committed hara-kiri, and in turn was decapitated by Hiroyasu Koga, age 25. These bizarre suicides were performed before Lt General Kanetoshi Mashita, the commanding general whom the raiding party had previously tied to a chair in his office. Koga and Masahiro Ogawa the two survivors of the coup were arrested, and have been charged with homicide at the request of another person.
