May 05, 1971 - Japan's First Undersea lab: Japan's first underwater habitation laboratory recently completed in Kobe, will make it possible for four aquanauts to live for 30 days or more 100 metres below the sea to carry out exploitation of the seabed, marine, life, currents, and discovery of present unknown factors. The laboratory consists of a cylindrical pressure chamber 11.8 meters long, 6.5 meters high, and 4.7 meters in width, which allows the aquanauts to live comfortably while submerge in an atmosphere of mixed gases, oxygen and helium. The undersea laboratory was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the Japan Association of Underwater Exploitation, and will go into operation next spring.
