1976 - New U.S. Embassy In Tokyo To Open During Bicentennial Week. Work on the new U.S. Embassy in Akasaka, Tokyo is almost completed for the official opening in the U.S. bicentennial week of celebrations. The building is on the site of the former U.S. Embassy, and has 11 floors and 2 floors below ground, of its 148, 000 square foot area. The original cost was 2-million, but due to the rises in material and labor, it is expected to cost 5-million
