1976 - First Pedestrian Escalator In Tokyo. Tokyo's first pedestrian escalator has gone into service at Kinshicho, in the Koto Ward of the city to carry them to an overhead bridge in order to cross a wide and busy road. The all-weather escalator is 16.64 m in length and cost 43 million yen (£240, 000). The moving stairway is controlled by a television camera and a monitoring camera 6km apart in a traffic office in down-town Tokyo.
