1972 - no surrender soldier bows at emperor's palace: ex-Japanese soldier shichi yokoi, who his our in the jungle of Guam 28 years, was permitted to enter the grounds of the imperial palace in Tokyo and pay his respects to the emperor by bowing before the palace. yokoi, whose greatest wish was to perform this act before he left for his home in Nagoya, was emotionally overcome after bowing deeply to the palace building--although he did not see the emperor, and was supported by his hospital nurse and a relative as he left the palace grounds. photo shici yokoi, places his hand on his heart as he leaves the imperial palace grounds supported by the nurse who has attended him since he was brought back to Tokyo from Guam, and a relative
