Jean Cocteau and Maurice Garcon of the French Academy
1959 - French Academy's Dilemma. Members of the French Academy met to elect the successor of Claude Farrere, the famous author of Sea Stories who died some time ago. The election could not be held as the three candidates withdrew their candidature at the last moment. It is believed that General De Gaulle's objection to one of the candidates, the novelist Paul Morand, was responsible for the decision the three took to withdraw their candidature.
