Sep. 09, 1966 - Britain's Top Secretary: Britain's Secretary for 1966 is Mrs. Jennifer M. Tattersall, of Ealing, London. Mrs. Tattersall, who is aged 27 and private secretary to the Chairman of Charringtons Brewery, wins the award by coming first of the 43 successful candidates for the London Chamber of Commerce Private Secretary's Diploma. This examination is designed to set a standard for private secretaries. To pass, candidates have to have a wide knowledge outside normal office routine and this year's examinations included questions on the Income Policy, the clean up TV campaign, the issues in the last general election and whether there is a need for government of the west men of all parties. Other tests were designed to test initiative, organising ability and general manners. Holders of the Diploma are eligible to join the Institute of Qualified Private Secretaries, the aim of which is to raise the status of the private secretary. The first winners of the London Chamber's new examination for the private secretary's certificate are also announced today. This new examination has been set up as a stepping stone for the Diploma and to set a standard for secretaries to middle management. 113 girls passed out of a total entry of 355, and placed top was Miss Patricia Matthews, of Putney, aged 24, who works in the Personnel Department of Coca-Cola Limited.
