Jet aircraft goes into sea from aircraft carrier

Feb. 26 Jet Aircraft Goes Into Sea from Aircraft Carrier: In a drama that lasted for exactly seven minutes - pilot commander J E Davis USN - was saved from death - in an accident aboard the United States Aircraft Carrier Shangri La during the NATO manoeuvres north of Scotland. Commander Davis was taking off by catapult in a Navy F8U-1 crusader jet fighter when the machine veered to the right as a result of an apparent failure in the linkage between the plane and run. The machine was almost righted - when the right rear wheel skidded off the deck into the gun tub below. The aircraft rolled over across the gun tub - and plunged over the side - tail first into the Norwegian sea. The photos were taken by Airman J A Warren of Florida with a Fairchild K-20 aerial twenty camera in approx 20 seconds. The aircraft floated alongside the aircraft carrier - and Davis did not clear the plane until after it had submerged. He was rescued and treated in the sick bay - his only injury being a one inch cut to his left elbow. He was recovered from the launch - and was in the sick bay three minutes later. Photo Shows:- View of the aircraft poised for its tail-first dive into the sea. Note that the pilot had not even opened his canopy when the picture was taken
