1955 - Press-Button Super Clean Mining! 100 Million Tons Of Coal. And The New Million Electric Mine In Wales: It seems the traditional days of dirty coal mining are beginning to fade away. In fact in the tiny village of Cynheidre, Carmarthenshire, those days are already a nostalgic memory. For the new mine, run entirely by electricity, is dust free, cleaner than any other mine, and is the biggest mining project ever undertaken in Britain. Instead of having to bend and crawl as in the traditional version of coal mining techniques, miners in this new one are able to stand upright, use automatic shovels and power loaders instead of picks; and breathe almost pure air. But their faces still get black. For generations the miners in this Gwandraethiley have burrowed like moles in underground passages. Geologists believe that there is 100 million tons of the worlds best anthracite under the quiet rolling hills. And by 1963 the show pit will be producing 55-, 000 tons of saleable coal a year. Old pits will be shut down and nearly 3, 000 miners will step into a new age in mining.
