1965 - Space-Age Helmet For Miners: A prototype dust helmet for the protection of coal miners, has been developed by the Safety in Mines Research Establishment. A small axial fan blows the dusty air through a bag filter inside the top of the helmet, and the clean filtered air passes over the wearers face and escapes from the bottom of a flexible skirt which is designed to reduce inward leakage of unfiltered air. Development of the helmet - which looks like a space helmet, is another step forward in the continuous battle battle against pneumoconiosis, the lung disease which has prematurely shortened the life of many coal miners. Photo shows The experimental dust respirator to fight pneumoconiosis. A small fan mounted on the back and operated by the lamp battery blows air over the face through a filter set in the top of the helmet. Further work is needed to reduce the weight of the helmet and the noise of the fan. (Credit Image: (c) Keystone Pictures USA/ZUMAPRESS.com/Mary Evans)
