Feb. 29 In The World To A Fully Automated Coal Mine - England: An elaborate central control room receiving information on the operating state of all parts of the mine is the nerve centre ofvrootes Colliery, nottinghamshire, which is expected to begin production on the first of five remotely operated coalfaces later this year. A decision to apply the lates remote control techniques to all operations means theverootes should produce an extra quarter of a million tons, bringing the total annual output to 1-million tons, with a labour force on only 770 men. Each part of the colliery operation will be supervised by a sector controller and information from each sector will be automatically transmitted to visual indicators in the colliery central control room. Thus the central control room operator will be able to see at a glance the state of working in any part of the mine, from the production of coal at the face to the leading of trains taking the output to Notthingham power stations. Closed circuit television is also used to monitor important points at which coal is transferred from one transport system to another on its journey from the coalface to the surface. Basic information on the state o fhe mine will be transmitted automatically from the central control room to the colliery General Manager's office at frequent intervals, thus enabling the management to make speedy decisions and transmit his instructions to the sectors concerned through the central control room.
