Jun. 06, 1960 - Many Killed In Monmouthshire Pit Disaster. Forty Five Men Lose Their Lives: Forty five men are said to have lost their lives in the disaster which struck at Six Bells Colliery, Abertillery, Monmouthshire - late yesterday. The men perished in an explosion caused by fire damp 1, 000 feet under the ground. Rescue work commenced immediately but it was soon learned that there was little hope of saving any of those trapped.
