Aug. 08, 1966 - The World's Largest Dredger: The world's largest dredger, both in measurements and performance, has been put into operation at the opencast works over a brown coal deposit, called Fortuna, near Bergheim-Erft, Germany. The steel monster weighs nearly 7, 600 tons - its length is 210 metres and its height 73 metres. The paddle wheel itself is bigger than a house. Seven people are needed to operate the dredger, which is able to remove a day's output of 220, 000 tons in 20 hours.
