Jews of Djerba prepare for Jewish New Year

1955 - The Jews of Djerba, island off North Africa, direct descendants of the Jews who fled from Jerusalem when Titus destroyed their Temple, will celebrate the Jewish New Year with all their Religion's ancient ceremony. JEWS Prepare To Celebrate The New Year, Throughout the world Orthodox Jews are preparing to celebrate their New Year which starts on Saturday September 20th and lasts until the Sunday evening. those two days no work is done and Jews must not go to places of amusement. The Jewish Calendar is supposed to date from the Creation, which is reckoned to have been anterior to the Christian era by 3, 760 years and 3 months. Services will take place in the mornings in the Synagogues. Typical of the ancient people is the Colony of primitive Jews who live in the village of Hara Sgrira on the North African Island of Djerba. The Colony has been there for 2, 500 years, their dress and habits are Biblical and some of their religious books and ornaments are priceless.
