May 05, 1955 - Girl Cheated Death After Falling Under Express Train: A pretty 18 year old girl cheated death by 18 inches on the railway line to London yesterday. A Cambridge to London express roared over her as she lay between the rails at Waltham Cross station. Women screamed. The train screeched to a halt. But the undercarriage of the eight coaches - only 18 inches above the track - missed the girl. A porter dragged her on to the platform unhurt, but shaken. Last night the girl, Joan Smith, of Waltham Cross, a telephonist, Last night in a hospital bed she said I was feeling queer and don't know what happened on the platform.
