Feb. 28 Australia to see Joan Sutherland at last: Joan Sutherland, today one of the world greatest operatic sopranos, was born and bred in Australian but to this day they have hardly heard her sing a note down under, either on stage or TV. She was to have her first professional appearance there a short while ago, but illness prevented it, as it has done throughout her career. Her doctors told her that the long journey would put an end to her singing. This was great disappointment both to her and to the Australians. So Peter Bernados, one of Sydney's leading producers was sent to Bristol to produce and record an hour-long programme of her most famous arias for showing in Australia in November. To do this managed to catch for a few hours in Milan for advance discussion, and then they both put in a hectic 14 hours at T.W.W. studios doing in one day what would normally have taken two to three. Joan Sutherland is so skilled that many scenes were taped with rehearsal. Appearing with her was her husband, Richard Bonynge, conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, and Margareta Elkins, a fellow Australian who started her singing career on almost the same day that Joan did. All three were interviewed by Michael Denison, who is well-known on the Australian stage. Rights for tele-recording have been bought by America and Britain.
