Jocelyn Liddell, suspension bridge to save long trip

Jan. 01, 1966 - Schoolgirl has her own suspension bridge: Eight-year old farmer's daughter, Jocelyn Liddell now has her own suspension bridge. It was built by her local Education Committee at a cost of £250, to save her making a 24 mile trip to and from school each day. Jocelyn used to make the trip in a taxi provided by the committee to get from her home at Kerse Farm, Courance (Dumfriesshire, Scotland) to the single teacher Primary school at Garrol (Dumfriesshire), six miles away. After a while we decided that it could be considerably cheaper in the long run to build the bridge even though Jocelyn is the only one who uses it said a spokesman for Dumfriesshire Education Committee. So now Jocelyn, crosses the bridge four times a day to school across the river, Kinnell Water, It's wonderful of the committee to build this bridge just for Jocelyn. She can get to school in ten minutes now, said her father Mr. Alex Liddell, whose farm is only a few hundred yards from the school if you use the bridge.
