John Danford, sculptor, working on statue for Benin, Nigeria

Apr. 30, 1953 - Emotan, The Market Woman'. Native Statue For Western Nigerian City: Benin City Native Authority, Western Nigeria, at the suggestion of the Oba Of Benin, has commissioned a statue of Emotan, a Benin market woman of the 15th century, revered by the Bini people for the humanitarian work and love of children. It is to be erected over her grave near the market place in Benin. The sculptor is John Danford, who is the British Council's Regional Director in the Western Province of Nigeria. He is working on the statue which is 6ft. tall - in a Chelsea studio. It is to be cast in bronze.
