John Masefield receives Hanseatic Shakespeare prize

Dec. 12, 1951 - Deputation from Hamburg University presents John Masefield with Hanseatic Shakespeare prize.: A deputation from Hamburg University today presented the Hanseatic Shakespeare Prize to John Masefield, 73 year old Poet Laureate, which he won in 1938. In the last 38 years he was prevented from going over to receive the diploma and the 10, 000 deutschmarks (about 850) - first by pre-war political tension, then by war itself, and lately by illness. The presentation was made at his Abingdon home, near Oxford. Photo shows John Masefield after receiving the diploma handing books to Miss Toepfer, representing Hamburg University (centre) and Miss Fiedler of Oxford, who has long connections with the diploma award
