Aug. 08, 1969 - Postmaster General Inaugerates Goonhilly Earth Station. TV Link With Japan Via Satellite: The Post Office satellite communications earth station at Goonhilly, Cornwall, which supplies Britain's television and telecommunication links via satellite with the rest of the world, was inaugerated today by the Postmaster-General, Mr. John Stonehouse. The station, which, the PMG said: has played a vital part in satellite communications since 1962, is now complete with two giant dish aerials looked on to satellites in both the western and eastern hemispheres. The Postmaster-General also inaugerated service via the new Intelsat III satellite over the Indian Ocean. This made possible the first direct live television exchange with Japan. The PMG exchanged greetings with the Japanese Minister of Posts and Tele-Communications, Mr. Toshic Kohmoto.
