1972 - During a training exercise at Cape Kennedy, Fla. Astronaut John W. Young prepares to fold up a model of the array of detectors that the Apollo 16 crew will take to the moon and back. The detector array, which will be attached to the exterior of the Lunar module, will use special materials to record the tracks of cosmic rays, mysterious particles that bombard the solar system from all directions in space. The detectors are expected to provide new clues to the age composition and origin of cosmic rays. The experiment was designed - under NASA sponsorship - by scientist at the General Electric Research and Development Center, Schenectady, N.Y. the University of California at Berkeley, and Washington University, St. Louis, Mo.
