Feb. 29 Visit of the President of the Syrian Arab Republic Hafiz El-Assad at West Germany; The president of the Syrian Arab Republic and Mrs. Assad paid an official visit to the West Germany from 11 to 15 September 1978. They were accompanied by three ministers, among them Foreign Minister Abdel Halim Chaddam. The first three days of his visit Presiden t Hafis El Asaad conferred in Bonn with Federal President Walter Scheel, Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, Federal Foreign Minister Hans District Genscher as well as with the chairman of the political parties represented in the Bundestag. Furthermore the Syrian President met with representatives of the German industry. Following his stay in the Federal capitol he visited industrial plants in Cologne and Essen and paid also a visit to the free and Henseatic City of Hamburg.
