Joseph Schmidt, Austro-Hungarian singer and film actor

Nov. 12, 1968 - This picture was released on the 25th anniversary of the death of singer Joseph Schmidt. Schmidt had a unique voice and entertained the public during his short life with guest stints at the opera in Dresden. He was Jewish and lived in Switzerland. There was a movie about him entitled Ein Lied geht um die Welt. When World War II broke out Schmidt was caught in France and attempted to escape to the United States, but was caught in Switzerland. He spent the rest of his days there, where he was in poor health. He had a heart attack and died at only 38 years of age
