Joyce Johns and Polikarp Koropeckyj arrive in UK

Oct. 10, 1956 - The Angel Of Varel Comes Home. Brings A Refugee From The Ukraine: Thirty-six years old Joyce Johns who comes from South Wales - retruned to Britain yesterday after spending two years at a West German Naval Barracks at Varel near the North Sea, where she has worked among 700 homeless refugees helping them to get a little comfort. She earned the nickname of The Angel of Varel'. She brought with her 60 year old Ukranian refugee Polikarp Koropeckyj. Mr. Koropeckyj's son Peter, now a cotton worker in Halifax, had managed to obtain a visa for his father to come to Britain after a long struggle and the visa arrived just as Joyce Johns was due to come home - so she performed yet another mission of mercy.
