Jun. 26, 1957 - Largest Radio Telescope in the World - was shown to the press yesterday for the first time.Built at Jodrell bank, Cheshire for Manchester University-at a cost of about ?650, 000 - it consists of a gigantic copper mesh bowl weighing 750 tons and suspended between two towers 180 ft.high.Funds for its construction were provided by the department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Nuffield Foundation.The diameter of the bowl is 250 ft. and height of the aerial masts is 621/2ft. It is for use in the investigation by scientists into the arrival of mtors into the earth's atmosphere - the behavior of the aurorealis etc. Photo shows Panoramic view of the inside of the vast copper mesh bowl - heart of the world's largest radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire
