Dec. 26 Anti-Strauss Demonstration in Hamburg, West Germany With Dangerous Riots: Violent riots between demonstrators and the Police happened in Hamburg, West Germany in August. The Occasion: An election campaign meeting taking place in the Hamburg Ernst-Merck-Hall organised by the Hamburg CDU. With CDU/CSU candidate for chancellorship Franz Josef Strauss. About 15000 mostly very young people protested against him. It was meant to be a peaceful demonstration and most of the People did so, but a few, classified as left wing extremists, left the route and made riots. More than 3000 policemen were in action, and brought in water guns, teargas and their sticks. when they were attacked by demonstrators with bottles, paving stones, and pyrotechnic articles. The result: 102 policemen and five demonstrators were injured. This has been only the start of the hot phase Bundestag elections campaign; may be hoped an exception.
