Photo Shows The use of supersonic waves for the non-destructive testing of materials has frequently been proposed since the discovery of convenient methods of Initiating and detecting such waves. In the Kelvin Hughes supersonic flaw detector, seen here, the transmitter probe directs a supersonic wave beam in the form of pulses of short duration. If teh sample under going test is perfectly sound teh progagation of this supersonic energy is only reflected by the base of the material. There reflected energy picked up by the receive probe equipment shows only transmission on the CRC. Should there be any defect between the surface and the base of the material on test, then a certain amount of the transmitted energy will be reflected in advance of the base echo. and such reflection will indicate itself by a pre-deflection of the trace
