Sep. 09, 1952 - King Henry VIII Wine Cellar in its new setting, The cellar within a Cellar; The King Henry VIII Wine Cellar, Whitehall, Gardens, was shown to the press this afternoon for the first time in its new setting. The Ecryot was a wine cellar at ground level - was built in the time of Cardinal Wolsey and is one of the few remains of the Tudor Palace of Whitehell which King Henry VIII appropriated from the See of York when the Cardinal was deprived of the great seal in 1529. As the Cellar was interfered with development and elevation of the new building it was moved. It is 62ft. Long; 32 ft. wide and 20ft. high and weighs 1, 000 tons. The whole building was first moved 43ft. 6 ins. laterally on a staging; It was then lowered by screw jacks through a distance of 18 ft, 9 ins. and ultimately rolled back 33ft, 10 ins. to its present position which is approximately beneath its original site.
