Sep. 09, 1980 - 65th Birthday Of Franz Josef Strauss: 65 years ago, on Sept. 6th 1915, Franz Josef Strauss was born in Munich, West Germany. Strauss was charter-member of the CSU in 1945, since March 61 he is chairman of this party. He belongs to the Bundestag since its foundation; at first he was deputy-chairman of the CDU/CSU Bundestags faction. In Oct.53 he became Federal Minister of Special Assignments, in Oct 55 Federal Minister of Nuclears and in Oct.56 he took over the office of the Federal Minister of Defence. In 1962 the successful career of the dynamic Bavarian politician was interrupted suddenly by the Spiegel affair. But in 1966 he made a political comeback, when he became Federal Minister of Finance in the Great Coalition'. Since 1968 Franz Josef Strauss is Bavarian Prime Minister. 1979 he was nominated as CDU/CSU candidate for chancellorship for the Bundestag election, taking place in Oct.5th 1980.
