Konstantinos Karamanlis, Greek Prime Minister

Nov. 11, 1977 - The Main Competing Political Leaders in the Greek Election of November 20th 1977: Konstantinos Karamanlis: Aged 70, currently Prime Minister and Leader of the Governing New Democracy party which he founded upon his return from his Paris eleven year self-exile in July 1974, to take over the country upon the collapse of dictatorship amidst the Cyprus crisis and war tension with neighbouring Turkey. In the November 1974 elections Karamanlis won 54 percent of the popular vote and 218 of the 300 seats in parliament, a majority unprecedented in Greek history. In the coming elections he is again expected to win easily but to lose a substantial number of votes through the formation of an ultra-right party and growing Centrist Sympathies. Furthermore, external dangers are no longer considered so threatening as to make Karamanlis an absolute must, even though his international prestige is widely acknowledged by the Greek Public
