Lady Churchill and grandson Nicholas Soames, Royal Mint
Sep. 09, 1965 - Lady Spencer Churchill strikes the first Churchill Crown; Lady Spencer Churchill today went to the Royal Mint to Strike the first Churchill crown. The Chancellor of the exchequer, Mr. Callaghan, was present in his capacity of Master of the Mint together with the Deputy Master Mr. J.H. James. Lady Spencer Churchill operated a press which in one operation will impart at a blank the observe and reverse designs and the milling. The Press will exert a pressure of about 200 tons and will be capable of striking at the rate of about 80 pieces per minute. The first piece will be handed to Lady Spencer Churchill by Mr. T.J. Bennett, Chieft Colner in the Mint. Issues to the public will begin on October 11th.
