Launch of world's largest oil tanker

1968 - World's Largest Tanker Launched. A 276, 000-DWT tanker, the largest in the world has been launched at the Yokohama Shipyard of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, Co. Ltd. in Japan. The mammoth ship is 346-m. long and 53.3m. wide, and will be completed by the end of August this year for the Bantry Transportation Co. of Bermuda through the National Bulk Carriers Inc of U.S.A. who have ordered two more like her. The big tanker will carry oil from the Persian Gulf to a central terminal station to be constructed in Bantry Bay, south-west Ireland, and go via the Cape of Good Hope. The tanker will carry 250, 000 kilo litres of oil. if this amount of oil were placed in 200 litre barrels ans stacked as one on top of the other height would be 180 times that of Mount Everest. Her deck space area are sufficient for two soccer fields, or 62 tennis courts. Her keel was laid last October 7, 1967. Show is 31.8 metres longer than the Queen Elizabeth, and her height from bottom to upper deck of 32 metres is equivalent of a 10-storey building.
