Leaders of former Greek dictatorship on trial, Athens
Feb. 25 The 21 top protagonists of the former seven Greek dictatorship went on trial on Monday, exactly one the collapse of their suppressive regime, charged with high treason, they face the death penalty if found guilty. Three others facing the same charges have managed among the 21 are ex dictator and colonel Junta strongman and head of the dreaded military, Dimitrios Ioannides, and former regent and General Papadopoulos two closest associates, Colonel Nicholas and Brigadier Styliano Patakos, are also included. The trial is taking place before a 5 member jury in a specially prepared courtroom in the women's Korydalos prison on the outskirts of Athens. They are detained in the men's section of the same prison. The decision to hold the trial there was taken to prevent demonstrations or disturbances and consequences in the city centre. Meanwhile around Korydalos security measures are being taken - platoons of police bearing machine guns stand behind armoured vehicles. Witnesses allowed into the courtroom are thoroughly searched, the accused are charged with various crimes
