Lee Kuan Yew, Prime Minister elect of Singapore

Jun. 06, 1959 - People's action party members released from jail in Singapore; The eight members of the People's Action Party which won the recent Singapore general election - who were held in Changi Jail Under the public Preservation Security Ordinance, were released today. Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the Prime Minister designate had earlier announced that he would not form a government unless they were released. The man had been held since the riots in 1956. Singapore was yesterday declared an independent State within the Commonwealth.
