Leprosy in Indonesia
Feb. 26 Leprosy is still a scourge in the East: Indonesia makes efforts to control it by opening Leprosariums: Almost entirely unknown today in the Western world, the scourge of Leprosy is today still a frightening one in the East. Indonesia is one of the territories where it is mant, although in old Javanese literature it is not mentioned. It is thought to have originated there from a group of Balinese who contracted it from Chinese traders. The Government have set up a number of Leprosaria, and operated a training scheme for the lepers. Publicity tries to encourage sufferers to enter the Leprosaria, and to educate the people in how to recognise the disease and the importance of separation. In the Leprosaria the patients get food, education and medical treatment, although cures once the disease reaches the secondary and tertiary stages are impossible.
