Feb. 02, 1958 - Lewisham Rail Crash Driver Accused. William Trew Receives Summons Alleging Manslaughter. Sixty-one year old William Trew was accused of manslaughter. He was the driver of the Ramsgate bound steam train which crashed into the back of an electric near St. John's, Lewisham. A verdict of accidental death was given at the inquest on the crash victims. Ninety people lost their lives. A summons, applied for by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Sir Theobald Mathew, was granted by a London magistrate.
