Dec. 12, 1966 - New Member of Swiss Government; Mr. Paul Chaudet, Swiss minister of Defense, having resigned from office, his successor had to be elected at joint session of both houses. Mr. Chaudet having been of the right democratic party, the seat fell to that party by tradition. By tradition also it should have gone to a candidate from one of the French Cantons of Switzerland, like Mr. Chaudet was as was to be supposed however, it was a candidate of the Italian speaking Swiss Canton (Ticino), who made it. Firstly, he was nominated as only candidate by the right democratic party, and secondly he appealed to many of the representatives of German speaking Cantons. He was elected at the first ballot with 137 votes of a majority of 112. Dr. Nello Celio advocate at Lugano, newly elected member of Swiss Government, taking oath. He will probably not succeed to the Defense Ministry having no military career, and seems to prefer Finances
