Liverpool Cathedral, 750th anniversary

Feb. 25 The Liverpool Cathedral on St. James's Mount, looks out over the City and the river. It is still under construction, having been commenced in 1904. Liverpool to celebrate the 750th Anniversary of its First charter: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother will mark Liverpool's Charter Celebrations by honouring the City with an all-day visit on June 25. The City's celebrations of the granting of the first of its Charters, granted by King John will take many different forms, and the Queen Mother is expected to see as many of them as time will permit. There is an Historical Exhibition, recording the city's long history as a seaport, an Industry Advances exhibition, depicting Liverpool's contribution to the industrial life of the nation, a Shipping Exhibition, an exhibition of antique musical instruments staged by the famous music firm of Rushworth and Dreaper, a libraries exhibition, an Arts Festival and special performances at the theatres the St. George's Hall and by the armed forces. The King John Charter was issued at Winchester in 1207, and is still preserved, as are many other historic documents tracing the growth of the town from a cluster of houses huddling by a creek to the huge free port of the industrial revolution era and today.
