London spy telephone, Kensington 8955

Oct. 10, 1962 - London Spy Telephone number: Kensington 8955 became the busiest telephone line in London last night. It was the number mentioned in the secrets case which was heard at Bow Street as the line which Admiralty clerk William John Vassall used to telephone a Russian spy contact, Nikolai Ilorovin. The number was mentioned in reports of the case in the evening newspapers- and the present occupant of the flat at 66 Pelham Court, Kensington, Mrs. Norah reevem was besieged with calls asking for Miss Mary, the code name said to have been used to Vassall. The GPO changed the number at her request. Photo shows the telephone said to have been used for passing information to the Russians
