That they turned out to be heavily-disguised Lord and Lady Longford disappointed no one. The fancy dress business was for the 21st birthday party of their daughter, Catherine, held at Strawberry Hill, the mock Gothic mansion at Twickenham in Middlesex. Lord Longford, more frequently occupied with Parliamentary procedure as Leader of the House of Lords, decided that party-wear should have literary or historical associations since Lady Longford has just finished a book on Queen Victoria that solved her problem.
