Aug. 08, 1979 - Lord Mountbatten Killed In Boat Blast. Lord Mountbatten of Burma, 79, Admiral of the Fleet, and the last viceroy of India, was killed during a fishing trip with other members of his family. Their boat the 29ft Shadow V, was blasted by a 501b IRA bomb about five minutes after leaving Mullaghmore Harbour, Co Sligo, Ireland. His grandson, Nicholas Brabourne, 14, and an Irish crewman, Paul Maxwell, 16, were also killed. Three other family members were seriously injured, they were the Earl's daughter, Lady Brabourne, 55, and her husband Lord Brabourne, 54, the Dowagar Lady Brabourne, 82, and the twin brother of the dead Nicholas, Timothy, and all seriously injured and in intensive care at the Sligo General Hospital.
