Dec. 12, 1979 - Lord Soames the new Governor of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia: It was announced today that Lord Soames, leader of the House of Lords, is to take over as the new Governor of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia. he is expected to take up residence in Salisbury next week. Lord Soames was at one time British Ambassador to France, and he is married to the daughter of the late Sir Winston Churchill, Mary.
