Lord Stonham opens police exhibition, Burlington Arcade

Jul. 07, 1969 - Minister Opens Burlington Arcade's first ever exhibition. Scotland Yard show special museum collection never before seen by Public: The Minister of State, Home Office (Lord Stonham), deputising at the last minute for the Home Secretary, today opened the Burlington Arcade's first ever Exhibition. Presented by the Metropolitan Police, it is entitled Reflections on Crime and will be open to the public during shopping hours until August 7. The exhibits on show in the Arcade's windows come from the Special Museum at Scotland Yard and represent many important milestones in the history of crime. The period covered by the exhibition links with the age of the Arcade, which this year has held numerous events in celebration of its 150th anniversary. In 1819 (the year the Arcade opened) there occurred the notorious Peterloo Massacre at Manchester, and it was largely because of the reactions to the horror of this event that the militia were disbanded and the move started which led to the type of Police Force we have today. In a sense therefore, the modern Policeman was born at the same time as the Arcade, and this was the thought that caused the Arcade authorities to invite Scotland Yard to put on the Exhibition.
