Sep. 09, 1960 - The Unchanging Symbol Of Admiralty: A meeting of the naval and civil head of Britain's Royal Navy, the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty in the Oak-penciled Board Room, the Admiralty, Whitehall, London. Described by a historian as the central and unchanging symbol od Admiralty the Board Room has been scene of historic naval decisions of the world importance since the first meeting was held in it 1975. the Pear wood carving over the fireplace (left), probably made in 1969 by Grinling Gibbson or his school, was transferred from the former Admirably. It shows nautical instruments of the 16th and 17th centuries, fruit, flowers and royal insignia. It surrounds a wind -dial, the pointer of which still moves slowly as it has throuogh centuries. The fireplace no longer has a flue, a modern hatting system making it unnecessary. The mahogany table, made about 1786, has (left) a deep recess, reputedly cut to accomodate the portly figure of a victorian member of the board. the paintings, added in 1847, are a seascape (over the door) and king willima IV. lord High admiral, 1827-8.
