Lorraine Basin Collieries, miners in brass band, London

Jul. 07, 1954 - Famous Brass band arrives.: The 185 miners who form the famous brass band of the Lorraine Basin Collieries are spending today in London and to mark their pleasure at the visit they asked that arrangements be made for them to give a little entertainment to London and Londoners. This they will be doing in the Embankment Gardens this evening. After playing in the Embankment Gardens they dine in Soho and leave Victoria by the night ferry train. After the war, only ten of the pre-war members of the band remained. It was reconstituted in December, 1947, and after a hard struggle the conductor, M. Paul Semler Collery, assisted by Leon Terrade (the assistant conductor) and Edgard Libert (drum major) has built it up again to a full brass band of 185 complete with drums, trumpets, bugles and trombones. All the players are mineworkers, coming from various towns and villages in Lorraine, most are underground workers. Photo shows some of the drummers of the band after arrival at Victoria this morning
